I don't often write about my feelings about rights, or politics in general. I was raised to believe that political beliefs were just as personal as religious beliefs, and that bringing them up can start equally heated fights.
That said, I am extremely happy that DOMA was declared unconstitutional. As someone whose mother is not heterosexual, these are issues that apply to my family, and people I care about, as well. The thing is, I really don't feel it's my business who, or how many who's, someone is involved with. As long as it does not involve me, and no one is getting hurt, so be it.
Living in Southeast Missouri as someone who veers toward socially liberal can be a task. Living in Rush Limbaugh's hometown makes it imperative that I keep my opinions to myself. However, this is something I cannot jut conveniently keep quiet about. People due everyday because of who they are. I don't understand that.
Gay men still have a lifetime ban from donating blood. There are hundreds of housing and financial guidelines that can shut out the LGBT community legally. How wrong is it to legislate love, just because it is a bit different than someone else might do it?
I make no promises that I will ever have kids, but if I ever do, they will understand that love knows no color, no religion, and no gender. Love simply knows itself in another person. The love will always be what counts.
