OK, so I live in a tiny blip of a town in southeastern Missouri. (Or, I do until the end of this week.)
Funnily enough, there is a restaurant at the end of the street I live on. I have lived here for over 6 months, and until today, had never eaten there. I am uncertain why I hadn't checked it out; I just plain hadn't.
So, to break the monotony of moving/packing/the too-quietness of the apartment, I walked down to Gordonville Grill for dinner. I noticed several people dining at their outdoor patio, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I walked through the bar area and into the dining room.
It's a smallish building, but it felt very homey, and I was immediately greeted and shown to a seat. It was quiet, with oldies playing in the background, but the server gave great input on the food on the menu, and seemed interested in my choices.
I ordered the three-piece catfish meal, and that included a vinegar-based slaw, tartar sauce, steamed broccoli and carrots, and hush puppies. The slaw was a little different from what I was used to, but it was tart and refreshing, kind of a palate cleanser between bites of other things on my plate. The hush puppies were on the smaller side, but you could tell they were homemade, and they had a great flavor. The steamed veggies were just right. The tartar sauce tasted like it had a pinch more lemon juice than normal, but I liked it, as I normally put extra lemon on my seafood, anyhow. The catfish....
The catfish was some of the best I have ever eaten. It was light, flaky, very clean flavor. The breading was crisp without being overly so. The flavor profile was spot-on. I wanted to ask for a dozen more pieces and subsist on nothing else until I leave town on Thursday. It was a world apart. Bloody transcendent.
Including tax and my drink, the meal totaled to $14.05. It was completely worth it, though next time, I might go for the four-piece meal. I left comfortably full, but that fish is hard to set down.
If you get the chance to check this place out, I heartily recommend it. 5/5 stars, guys.
